- Description: The Roomba doesn't have a dashboard. The Roomba is the dashboard. (You'll see.)

There's an essay dropping Sunday about observability. On the cover of that essay, on the floor, doing kintsugi, is a Roomba. Nobody in the meeting asked why the Roomba was on the cover.

(That's how you know it belongs there.)

---

Here's a question. The Roomba wants me to ask it. It has been waiting.

**What does the Roomba know that the dashboard doesn't?**

The dashboard knows what someone remembered to instrument. The Roomba knows where the sofa is. The dashboard knows p99 latency. The Roomba knows the cable behind the desk that everyone steps over and nobody moves. The dashboard knows the incident started at 03:14\. The Roomba was already pivoting at 03:13.

(The Roomba does not need to be told the room changed. The Roomba is how the room finds out.)

---

This one's for the people who have been doing this forever. On call. Small hours. The pager is quiet — not because nothing happened. Because *you* happened. You bumped into it before it bumped into anyone else. You wrote the runbook that mends the thing back together with a little gold in the crack. You didn't call it kintsugi. You called it Tuesday.

Nobody wrote a headline about the outage that didn't. Nobody wrote a headline about the Roomba either.

(One could say something shifted. Nobody is prepared to specify what.)

---

The Roomba does two things.

It bumps into what's broken and mends it, and keeps going.

It vacuums up what nobody references anymore, and keeps going.

That's the whole job. Everything else is decoration.

(If you've been doing this for ten years you already know. If you've been doing it for twenty you're a little tired. If you've been doing it forever, welcome. The wine is on the floor.)

---

Here's the trick the essay Sunday is going to make out of a single word: *observability*.

The hero doesn't announce itself. The hero pivots. The hero adjusts eleven degrees to the left and keeps going and the room becomes livable without anyone noticing whose fault it wasn't. That's not a bug in the story. That's the story.

A thing that bumps into the world and mends and keeps going and doesn't call it heroism is what the whole system runs on. Always has. The dashboards came later. The dashboards are the story we tell about the Roomba after the Roomba has already saved the meeting.

(The reader who works in reliability just teared up a little and doesn't know why. It's fine. The Roomba does.)

---

So the question answers itself.

What does the Roomba know that the dashboard doesn't?

**That you were already there.**

Bemerkenswert. 🍷

[The essay Sunday.](https://systemic.engineering/o11y) The Roomba is on the cover doing the gold-in-the-cracks thing. (You knew that.)

![Remember the Roomba from my writing? The @roomba just entered the compiler. Of course it did. The @roomba is the mechanism that explores the graph, bumps into things, and triggers the @kintsugi build loop. When the build loop encounters a @kintsugi/fracture it cannot resolve at this logic altitude, it emits a circular reflexive commutator, a question, to either the developer, or a higher order @peer. To another subject. The loop is closing. 🍷](https://storage.ghost.io/c/98/e9/98e9adb1-dbc4-49f9-8ffc-34974cd59b3d/content/images/2026/10/substack-roomba.png)
