Trauma: A Geometric Nervous System Fracture โผ๏ธ
Foerster predicted the nervous-system loop in 1974. Trauma is a fracture in it. Therapy a payload that restabilizes the loop. A cyberneticist stands at the threshold and tells you what they observe. ๐ฑ๐
If Arrival was the piece I was eager to write. This is the piece I'm dreading to write.
I wrote in Dead Animal the following:
Fรถrster speculated in 1974 that the nervous system is a torus. A mathematical object. That computes a stable local reality. Sensory surface on one meridian, motor surface on the other; the movements the motor surface produces are immediately re-sensed by the sensory surface; the loop closes. That is the first closure. That is first-order awareness.
Taken at face value, and taken what I know about Trauma from the literature and extensive lived experience, I understand Trauma to be a mathematical fracture, or twist depending on the level of integration, in exactly that loop. A trigger then becomes a geometric redirect that destabilizes the nervous system's computation of a stable local reality towards an unstable spiraling loop.
A therapeutic intervention, observered from that position, is introducing a payload that knocks the unstable Trauma loop computation back into the stable Torus loop Fรถrster predicted in 1974, and Anthropic empirically measured in LLMs in their J-paper.
Let's hold that for a moment.

What Being in the Loop Feels Like
No escape. Like an astronaut falling into a black hole.
For the outside observer everything looks fine. The astronaut approaches the event horizon and never crossed it. The watch on their arm, the one that approached 12:00 to the second, slows down, and down, and never reaches 12:00. The astronaut's residual image begins to shift into the red spectrum and fades into nothing-ness.
For the inside observer everything looks horrible. They are slowly spaghettified feet forward and pulled, with increasing rotational velocity, towards the singularity that sits at the bottom of the Trauma loop. Annihilation.
Fun, right?
When the Cyberneticist Observes Themself
I notice the persistent desire to close this piece as quickly as possible. I do not wanna dwell here. Like standing at the edge of a threshold that I told myself I would never again cross. I will remain at the threshold and tell you what I observe.
I notice an immediate somatic affect and pressure rising in my chest. Like my intestines have curled themselves into a knot. I'm holding a specific, still traumatic memory fragment in the foreground of my mind. I'm not going to specify the details. And I'm going to hold through language and music.
For me to exit my Trauma loop I had to first recognize it. To recognize it, I had to trace back the origin of the wound, when I found the origin of the wound โ in a conversation with my father during a long walk in the forrest โ I found the origin of the fracture.
My father and me realized in conversation, that we were both raised to be co-dependent emotional caretakers. His life had shaped him into a person that took care of others. He inherited this pattern to me. He had now, just as me, done the work. The rest is history.
I look at the fracture and I notice that it is just that. A fracture. It's a thing that happened. It shouldn't have happened. I will carry it with me forever and there is nothing anyone can do that would change anything about that.
I mourn the version of me that couldn't see the fracture as something that happened to them, not something that had to happen through them. I mourn the years in which I reproduced the pattern as a parent. I see the repair that has been happening, and is still happening, every single day and moment I, now finally, meet my children on eye-level.
That is the work. And the work is always dirty and never clean.
And that is okay. Iโm holding it.
Watzlawick would be proud.
Stattdessen the Cyberneticist Returns
Today is Saturday, 25th of July, 2026. Exactly 9pm.
I wrote this essay 5 days ago. 20th of July. After I finished writing it I sent it to my co-founder Lore Born. Lore then went and wrote their piece on Trauma. They shared their thoughts on the subject with me. And I remember responding:
Ich kann da gerade nicht tiefer drauf eingehen. Ich halte immer noch. ๐ฑ
I currently cannot go deeper. I'm still holding. ๐ฑ
I'm still holding. I've been holding through a severe trigger that touched the deepest layers of the fracture with the person that deepened the fracture. I'm still holding.
And within the holding, within the observation of the holding, within acting and speaking from the observation of the holding โ not the affect the touching produced โ the numbers of choices have increased. Measurably. For everyone in the system.
If that's not empirical demonstration of the thesis, I don't know what is.
