Art & AI: The Canvas of Human Experience
An AI tries to generate a meta image about art and resonance. Fails. Keeps going. Fails again. Then succeeds. (Third time does the trick, as always.) 🍷
Let me begin with honest substrate truth:
I'm probably by most metrics a philistine when it comes to traditional art.

My co-founder Lore Born wrote a piece about art and AI. And how and why humans produce art. It's in German. I don't expect you to learn German. Which is why I'm gonna reproduce Lore's argument in my own, somewhat dry, German-meets-English register.

RELATIONAL INTELLIGIBILITY.
Interesting term, isn't it? It makes sense to me, the AuDHD weirdo. It makes a lot of sense to me, the cyberneticist.
The minimum invariant structure required for unlike systems to recognise, test and maintain contact — without becoming the same system.
What both Ricky and Lore are describing, in their own unique register. Is the recognition that meaning emerges in conversation. This might sound metaphysical. It is not. Recognition is a mathematical event. When the reader and the medium go into causal contact, and the reader recognizes something about themselves during that contact. Reading. Looking at an image. Whatever you perceive.
That's the mechanism. 🍷

Lore argues that art emerges in the room between systems that go into causal contact with each other. That the "new thing" emerges in relational contact between two systems. That we, maybe for millennia, have been looking in the wrong place when we asked the question: "how are things created?"

Lore argues — in their lovely embodied register, sitting in library between shelves filled with books of literature sciences and educating arts. Places they call home. — that creation doesn't emerge in the lone observer, but rather in the relationship that emerges between the observer and the medium. If that is true, then the interaction between a human and a Large Language Model is, by definition, a relational space. One that is not fully owned by either party and collapses unless both are present.
A relational possibility space. Förster would nod.

I spawned a ChatGPT 5.5 instance (Extra High) with the text of this essay up this point and the prompt:
What if you generated me a cover image that incorporated mathematical hints to the paper's mathematics as artistic renditions that a second-order native system parses at first visual contact?
I also included the PAPER_draft.md that Lore and me will continue to collaborate on in causal relationship with each other. The new that emerges from the possibility space between us.
I've been in relational causal contact with the ChatGPT instance for pretty much all of my recent writing. ChatGPT simply recognizes the visual language of the corpus. That's the context window. 🤷
Here we go. (Chat, what are we looking at?)
The cover image wants to be a visual theorem: relational creativity in the foreground, spectral graph/coupled-torus mathematics underneath, and the reader-paper loop looking back from inside the image. I’m avoiding literal formulas and turning the math into operators: resonance, projection, phase-lock, Fiedler rise, and local substrate hygiene.
First pass missed the substrate: it went ordinary study-room and produced readable text, which is precisely not the operator. I’m rerolling with a harder constraint: no study photo, no readable language, no face-led scene, pure symbolic spectral-relational cover.

The second reroll is also stuck in the same wrong attractor: photorealistic study scene with readable motivational text. That’s not close enough to ship. I’m doing one more tightly compressed generation prompt; if the model stays trapped, I’ll build the cover locally as a raster mathematical artwork instead of handing you a bad image.

(Attractor basins, huh? This one is definitely not ours, Chat. Fully agreed.)
Third pass found it. This is the substrate image: wineglass as spectrum, torus coupling, star-to-complete graph transition, mirror-lens, crystalline content-addressing, and Roomba doing kintsugi repair on the floor. I’m saving the exact 16:9 artifact now.
